Chimneys from the roofline up, are the areas that are the most exposed to all the elements and likely the first area to deteriorate. The cement crown on the top of the chimney can develop cracks over time and will need to be repaired or replaced, depending on the severity of the damage. This is also true for any homes or buildings that have parapet walls; the mortar and sometimes the bricks deteriorate because they are also exposed to the elements. When working with a roofing contractor, they should advise you to get either of these tuckpointed before you have any roofing repairs completed.
